In a sweeping series of national police actions in 1918-1919 known as the Palmer Raids, thousands of socialists, union organizers, IWWs and pacifist antiwar activists were rounded up and tried for sedition. The Red Scare was one of the largest suppressions of political dissent in American history. This volume, based on court transcripts, gives the history of one of these cases--that of college professor Scott Nearing. He was one of the few who was acquitted of sedition, on First Amendment grounds.
