The German Table is a fictional memoir. It is the biography of Hermann Reichsmann, who was born in London in 1940, the son of Hans-Markus and Berta. Two years before their only child was born, they were driven out of Germany following the Kristallnacht in November 1938. Together they spent the war years in Londons East End, The Jewish Quarter. In 1950 the Reichmanns return home to the new Germany.

Thus, Hermann Reichsmanns story is the biography of an age, when the awful things of the past were never mentioned to the children.Hermann himself is torn between two worlds. One is authentically German- the other is an extant reminder of an extinct species of Germans, no longer German Jews but Jews in Germany whose families were converted into pale columns of smoke in the industrialized process of killing known as genocide.

Hermann becomes a stranger in his own land.
