Peter Abelard was one of the great thinkers of the middle ages. As such, his life was made difficult as he took positions that ran contrary to the Catholic Church. The letters between Abelard and Heloise are an excellent primary source for such studies. As interesting is Abelard’s approach in “A Dialogue of a Philosopher with a Jew, and a Christian.” Abelard does not directly take a position in this book.

Instead, he presents as a role-play like scenario a discussion of many points of conflict. The discussion between the philosopher and the Jew centers on Old Law vs. natural law. A second discussion between the same philosopher and a Christian focuses on the nature of supreme good and ethical means of attaining it.Of central importance in the discussion is whether faith can and should be subject to scholastic application of reason. The philosopher comments on the limits of reason when it comes to faith. “You should not presume that I will allege as an excuse that saying of your Gregory, that miserable refuge: ‘Faith has no merit for which human reason offers proof.’…For if, through fear of losing merit, faith rules out all rational discussion and there is no room for judgment in the discussion of what ought to be believed, but instant assent must be given to what is preached whatever the errors sown by this preaching, acceptance has no point because there is no room for rational refutation where the use of reason is not permitted.” (80) In other words, the Philosopher says that faith must be grounded in reason, and it is not acceptable for Christians to argue otherwise simply because they cannot. For those readers inclined to philosophy or with an interest in theology, this is a great book in the history of the development of such thought.See my other reviews here!
