He was greatly admired in China and regarded as an honorary national, among his friends, colleagues and his students at the new Huaxi University where he was Professor of Chemistry.

His subsequent murder therefore shocked the nation to its foundations and his funeral was the largest ever reported in Chengdu.Until now the story of this remarkable man, who played such a pivotal role in what emerged to be the fading of Western missionary zeal in China as the 1960s Cultural Revolution loomed, has not been told. Now, drawing on family papers and Quaker archives, Charles Tyzack has produced a long-overdue and fascinating biography framed by a crucial period of China’s socio-political development.Charles Tyzack read English at Balliol College, Oxford, going on to be a Lecturer in English at Cardiff University.

He is the author of Friends to China- The Davidson Brothers and the Friends’ Mission to China 1886 – 1939 charting the experiences of his Quaker missionary grandfather and uncles in China. He has travelled extensively within the region, supporting Anglo-Chinese relations. He lives in Charlbury, Oxfordshire.
